  1. I am thinking about adding a reverse loop to my planned layout that just started construction, I run all MTH HO with DCS. Is there a specific wiring configuration that needs to be done for this to work with DCS? Is a reverse loop with DCS even possible?
  2. I am a big fan of German steam engines, it seems that a reasonably priced mid size model has finally come into fruition from Piko. However I run all DCS and would like this to do that as well. The 'base' model is DCC ready, I want to take out that and convert it to PS3. Has anyone gotten one of these or opened up other Piko European steam engines that would know if its possible or If there is even enough room in it to do that? https://www.piko-america.com/products/37240-dr-iv-br50-reko-steam-locomotive-g-scale

For instructions on how to upgrade the TIU and Remote software see below or my website: www.rayman4449.com/DCS_Tips.htm#DCS_Software_and_Upgrade_TIU_Remote (also see my website for info and photos for needed cables, additional information and troubleshooting.) Step 1: Updating the TIU **When updating to a different version of DCS software in your TIU and remote, you should always start by updating the TIU first.** Connect your TIU to the computer using either the 9 pin serial or USB cable (Your computer can already be booted up) Plug the 3.5mm stereo audio cable ends into the TIU's "Proto-Dispatch" & "Proto-cast" ports Connect the power supply to the Fixed 1 input port OR connect the Aux power supply to the Aux power port on the TIU Start the DCS Loader program Close out of any unnecessary programs or applications and do not use the computer while the update is in progress Click the load software to TIU Icon Carefully follow the instructions on the screen. (it will instruct you to connect the serial cable and 3.5mm audio cables) Then select the "*.DCSt" file (example: "tiu6p10.DCSt") The update process should start and will tell you when you are finished Step 2: Updating the Remote Once you have updated the TIU software to the version you are wanting to use, then update the remote. Connect your TIU to the computer using either the 9 pin serial or USB cable (Your computer can already be booted up) BE SURE TO REMOVE the 3.5mm stereo audio cable ends from the TIU's "Proto-Dispatch" & "Proto-cast" ports Connect the power supply to the Fixed 1 input port OR connect the Aux power supply to the Aux power port on the TIU Start the DCS Loader 5.xx program Close out of any unnecessary programs or applications and do not use the computer while the update is in progress Ensure your remote has good batteries and test it by turning it on. Ensure the remote is off before you get started Connect the remote to the TIU with the 4-pin narrow phone cable. (Be sure to plug the remote into the Remote input port NOT the AIU port!!!) Click the load software to Remote Icon Carefully follow the instructions on the screen. (it will instruct you to connect the serial cable and remote cord) NOTE: When instructed to press the power button on the remote, the remote should remain off. If the remote powers up, it's not detecting it's plugged into the TIU. See below steps for troubleshooting. Then select the "*.DCSr" file (example: "remote6p10.DCSr") Follow the instructions on the screen The update process should start and will tell you when you are finished.

WiFi DCS User's Guide: (Download from MTH) - Addendum to Guide: - Multiple WIUs (Connecting via Ethernet cable): To setup do the following for each WIU -- Connect the Ethernet cable from your home router/network, USB cable from TIU to WIU, attach Antenna, leave switch set to MTH, and plug in the WIU power cable. When the app first starts it looks for available WIUs. Hit the Refresh button once for every extra WIU you have on your network. (ie Press refresh once if you have 2 WIUs) Your active engine list will now be updated or you can now add engines and run trains. WiFi Firmware updates: (ver 1.1 Released 02/03/2016) Details regarding the update: WIU Wi-Fi Firmware v1.1 update To update: - Download the latest WIU Firmware *Click Here* - You will download one file (example: WIU_1.1.0.bin). No need to unzip, this is the file you select to update the firmware (See instructions in WIU user manual) - Log in to the WIU with your PC (refer to pages 9-12 in the WIU user manual *Click Here to download*) (WIU interface is called "LuCI") - Flash the WIU per the instructions in the User Manual Troubleshooting Tips: Key items to note: Some are having issues related to their devices and/or wifi networks themselves that are getting blamed on the MTH DCS app. (OS problems/Cheap tablets/Power save feature in phone/table OS/etc) Read through the items I have provided below. Some are also having issues with their App auto updating but they aren't updating the TIU to the latest DCS version when the app update requires it. So some are running old DCS versions 5.00 loaded to the TIU trying to run the most current version of the App and isn't working correctly. See the note I have below on this issue along with recommendations. Make sure your tablet/phone is actually connected to the MTH created Wifi network. Picture (Connected to Wifi) (You need to specifically confirm you are connected to the MTH wifi network and not another like your home network) Picture (Not Connected to Wifi) 'No TIUs Found' error message: Note, I have found that upgrading the WIU to the firmware v1.1 (released on 2/3/16) has resolved all occurrences of this issue. However if you get this message first make sure you are properly connected to the MTH WIU Wifi network or have it configured for your home network correctly (as noted in the Wifi DCS Users Manual - See above for link). If connected to network, close the DCS app and restart. (you need to manually close the app not just hit the home button). If you are unsure how to close the app, try rebooting the Smartphone/Tablet. If you still get the message, Cut power to the layout/TIU and WIU and power back on. Then hit the refresh button. Engine not responding: Hit the Refresh button to update your active engine list. Make sure the engine has been added to the App by adding 'New Engine' Connecting to WIU Wifi network: Network Key for logging into WIU wifi network directly is: mthdcswifi Power save mode on phone/tablet: Make sure you deactivate power save features applied to the DCS app itself and turn-off power save mode on the tablet. I generally recommend changing the screen time blank timeout to longer periods of time. MTH Wifi/vs home network: If you have issues with app and you are using your home wifi or Ethernet network, connect your tablet/phone directly to the MTH WIU Wifi network it creates. Tablet lagging/Slow: When tablets get to low battery levels it typically goes into power save mode and runs the processor at lower speed levels that can cause apps to lag and may cause issues. If your tablet is running low and lagging, stop using and charge it back up. App Auto-updates in Google Play store/Apple store: If you are someone that can't update your TIU/Remote software yourself or don't stay up-to-date on when new DCS versions are released, you may want to turn off App Auto-updates. Some App updates will need updated DCS version loaded to the TIU/Remote. Tablet quality/Price: Remember that you do get what you pay for. If you are willing to spend $1000s on your train collection, be willing to spend a little bit on a good quality tablet to ensure you get good battery life, decent speed and avoid strange issues that can come up with some of the cheapest tablets out there. The application itself may be a relatively simple and lnot very demanding on the tablet processor, but you still need reliability & stability! I have personally used the inexpensive Amazon Kindles with good result but in general I recommend considering a good quality name brand tablet like Samsung to minimize the number of issues you might encounter and to get good battery life. My personal preference has been the 7" tablets but 8" is likely close enough in size to feel the same. I would expect all Apple tablets to be of high quality and not have issues noted here on very low end Android tablets. See Tablet Recommendation List Running DCS App on Kindle: http://www.gscaletrainforum.com/index.php?/topic/996-mth-dcs-wifi-app-on-kindle-install-google-play-store/ Issue and bug reporting: If you find an issue or bug with the app please post here and the feedback will be shared with MTH: www.gscaletrainforum.com/index.php?/topic/727-mth-wifi-control-wiu-feedback-issue-reporting/#entry6258 Demo & Overview of the Wifi app: (Standard version) (Select 1080p HD to get max playback quality) *Note you can also swipe down to Refresh, or swipe left or right to move to the other screens* Ray's Electric Trains overview video: (50-1034) Note: The Refresh button (see GREEN arrow) that allows you to have the system perform a search on the layout and update your active engine list. MTH Trains DCS Wifi Quick start video: WiFi Interface Unit overview: (50-1034) Information on the DCS - Explorer Track Interface Unit w/Wi-Fi (50-1035): (This is an alternate Wifi control box intended for starter/basic users) - Info page: http://www.gscaletrainforum.com/index.php?/topic/1165-dcs-explorer-mini-tiu-and-wifi-in-one-unit/ - Note that the DCS Explorer (50-1035) isn't a replacement for the WIU device (50-1034) and will have a more limited feature set. It is intended for small starter sets with a 5amp limit. - This is a new item: DCS - Explorer Track Interface Unit w/Wi-Fi built-in (50-1035) - $129.95 MSRP - Availability date: In-stock as of 2/8/18 *Click here and email/call to purchase* - Control your trains via Wi-Fi with your smart device (phone/tablet) with a free version of the app for this device - Will not require TIU or WIU and will be like a TIU and WIU combined but will have a more limited feature set. - Expect this will could be very useful for One Gauge battery operators.
  8. This topic is to create a feedback list of various Android tables, so please share your experiences here. Notes: Power save mode: Make sure you deactivate power save features applied to the DCS app itself and turn-off power save mode on the tablet. I generally recommend changing the screen time blank timeout to longer periods of time. MTH Wifi/vs home network: If you have issues with app and you are using your home wifi or Ethernet network, connect your tablet/phone directly to the MTH WIU Wifi network it creates. My personal preference has been the 7" tablets but 8" is likely close enough in size to feel the same. I would expect all Apple tablets to be of high quality and not have issues noted here on very low end Android tablets. Recommend: Samsung Tablets - So far these are the best Apple Tablets should all be good as well Tablets with noted issues: Amazon 7" & 8" Kindles (8gb/16gb) - Link to Amazon.com - $49.99 for 7" Note: Using the Amazon Kindles requires additional step to get working as Google Play store is required in order to install DCS Wifi app. **See this topic for more info: Install Google Play Store on Kindle: ** One user seemed to have better luck using the Wifi when they moved to a Samsung tablet from using Amazon Kindle. Not Recommended/Avoid: Poloroid 7" (P7100) - Link to Menards - $39.99 RCA Voyager 7" (8gb/16gb) - Link to Walmart.com - $44.98 This tablet does NOT work well with DCS app and is basically unusable. **DO NOT BUY** Engines drop to inactive list due to strange issues with the tablet OS/Wifi connection/Power save features.

  13. I installed a PS3 board in my Challenger and I just tried to find the Challenger loco with the remote and the remote said that there is no engine to find. Checked wiring and appears to be good, it is acting as if it is dead. Any ideas. Bob.
  14. This a list of known DCC control equipment that has been found to have problems programming/controlling the MTH Protosound 3 engines/boards. (Some DCC equipment can have problems programing certain DCC decoders so this is not something isolated to the MTH Protosound 3 boards.) Problem DCC equipment list: (when trying to program MTH Protosound 3 boards/decoders) Marklin Central Station 2 (aka CS2): Reported issue with PS3: Has problem programming/changing CV values on some boards. Reported issue with other non-MTH DCC decoders: Has problems programming older/early Marklin decoders If you have issues, please review this master reference page: https://www.mthtrains.com/service-documents-taxonomy/proto-sound-30 Also for NCE, see: http://www.rayman4449.com/Programming_The_NCE_DCC_Controller.pdf I maintain DCC related info on my website at: http://www.rayman4449.com/DCS_Overview_Videos.htm#Operating_PS3_Under_DCC
  15. Wanted to share for those that have been wondering, MTH just indicated to me that PS3 upgrade kits are targeted for 2014.
  16. Took some time to take photos of the MTH Dash-8 to share with everyone: (Note: This engine has the pilot with wide open slot for if the user decides to attach the coupler to the motor block as opposed to the frame. The engine comes from the factory with smaller opening pilots that screw in place. For more info see the following pages: Additional Photos and Product information page: http://www.rayman4449.com/MTH_Dash-8.htm Repairs/Modifications page: http://www.rayman4449.com/MTH_Dash-8_mods.htm These pages are accessible off my home page at: www.rayman4449.com (Click the photo to enlarge)
  17. I picked up a couple of these MTH Russian Iron (aka 'Blue') boilered Triplexes (One Gauge) with a recent purchase and wanted to share some photos on what the production model actually looked like. I haven't seen many good quality pics that I felt accurately depicted the actual tone of blue/grey the production model had. Most people (including myself originally) preferred the black boiler version but having seen the blue in person I have to say it does look good. For more info see the following pages: Additional Photos and Product information page: http://www.rayman4449.com/MTH_Triplex.htm Repairs/Modifications page: http://www.rayman4449.com/MTH_Triplex_mods.htm These pages are accessible directly off my homepage at: www.rayman4449.com (Click the photo to enlarge)
  18. I'm in the process of building a 2 level around-the-room layout. The upper level is G scale and the lower level is O gauge. I will be running DCS and Lionel Legacy on the O gauge. I want to run DCS, MTS, and Conventional on the G scale. I have several questions: 1. I may want to use 2 channels of a TIU for G scale and 2 channels for O gauge. Can you run AC on 2 channels and DC on the other 2? 2. I expect to have 3 TIU's and would want to run in Super TIU mode. Will that be a problem with one TIU split between DC and AC? 3. I believe MTS is AC. So, I couldn't run it along with DCS (assuming I am running DC). If I decided to run DCS in AC, would I be able to run MTS and DCS on the same track (like you can with DCS and Lionel Legacy)? Thanks for any help you can offer.
  19. If you have a powered up layout in current operation there may come the time when you will want to use an unpowered siding or staging track like I do where you add the engine to an unpowered section of track, add power and drive it off. When you add power to a DCS engine, it first looks for a 'watchdog' signal which is sent by the TIU only when first turned on. After the TIU is turned on, the only way to trigger this signal to be sent again later is to hit the 'READ' button on the remote. (which is easy enough) But this idea just brought up (and many thanks to Chuck for sharing this with me) is the use of a DCS Remote Commander box passively connected to each siding. (set pictured below) These were created for inexpensive starter O gauge sets intended to control just one engine. However if you connect the DCS Remote Commander box to a siding passively (ie. Connect the red and black terminals to the siding) when the siding is powered up it will generate the watchdog signal automatically so you dont need to hit the 'READ' button when powering it up. (Also note that it does not matter what power polarity the DCS Commander box sees, it will still transmit the watchdog signal and the engine will still receive it so just connect a wire from each rail to each terminal and go.) Why this is important: If a DCS equipped engine receives track power without receiving the watchdog signal it assumes that it is supposed to run under regular analog track power and will power up and start running. So if you want to run an engine under remote control you will want to make sure you send the watchdog signal to the engine at the time it is powered up so it waits for remote commands. http://www.mthtrains.com/content/50-1033 Great tip and will be buying a couple of these for my two staging tracks on my layout. I'm trying to find out now if the box is available separately. If anyone is looking for these let me know and I can get a price for you. Raymond
  20. 3 hours ago Hi guys i am trying to find out what kind of PS2 boards are in my 70-3002-1 gauge one challenger. i am also wanting to know where I can purchase a new set of boards from as I live in Australia. I don't want to use the local mth tech. He has already tried to charge me a $100.00 fee to just to supply the boards. I also wanted to know the part numbers for these boards Please advise quentin
