Rayman4449
"Norfolk & Western Class A #1218 standing inside the steam shop as the shop crew starts the restoration process to place the engine back into service for the Norfolk Southern steam excursions. Since the mid-1960's #1218 stood on display at the Roanoke Transportation Museum until she was moved out on May 10th. This picture was taken days after the 2-6-6-4 was towed in from Roanoke, Virginia. She is seen here inside the old Southern steam shop at the Norris Classification Yard in Irondale, Alabama on June 3, 1985." Photo copyright Timothy Carr. The 1218 ran from 1987 - 1991 in excursion service and the NS steam program was canceled in 1994.
Rayman4449
Norfolk & Western 2-6-6-4 Class A #1218 slowly eases through the Norfolk Southern yard in Roanoke, Virginia among an army of diesels (and a few slugs) during the summer of 1987 soon after she reentered service. Note that at this date many NS units still carried N&W and Southern paint. Photo copyright Naoki Mafune.
enginear joe
Thanks for sharing that Ray. I didn't realize that the NW logo would still be in use that late. I need to study what the dates were for a lot of the mergers that happened over the years. Some were very public and I heard about them when I was growing up. Others weren't really made known around here that I know of.
benshell
Thanks for sharing. It's crazy to think that #1218 was operational so recently, and yet may never run again. But it's a great reminder to take advantage of the opportunities we have now to experience currently operational steam locomotives. I'm considering going to chase UP 844 again when it comes to Boise next month--that's "only" a day's drive for me. Of course I've seen it before, a few times. I really need to go east and see #611! Rayman4449
I was kinda surprised on the NW diesels in the picture as well. I completely agree on the taking advantage while you can. You never know when any of these companies will decide the PR value has met it's end and end their program.
