Rayman4449
Starting a main thread of just general photos and videos of the Union Pacific Big Boy. To start it off are what only can be described as the holy grail of American Steam photos Chuck found of the original 4000 at the factory at ALCO. (Great find!) Chuck
Those are the best! Even better than what's in the Kratville book! The moment in time captured in those pics are stunning when you really stop to think about it. The tanks are part of Roosevelt's lend lease program for Great Britian started in March 1941. These pics are figured to be taken around July/ August 1941 as the Union Pacific took delivery of 4000 in September 1941. From what I've read Churchill first started flashing the V for Victory sign in July? 1941. The V scribed on 4000 smoke box door is for Victory. Little did anybody know that in 4 short months Pearl Harbor would be attacked and America would enter the War. Talk about the right locomotive coming along at the right moment in time! All this happening at a place called Alco or the American Locomotive COmpany.

The pics next to the tanks are stunning. Also are the machine springing to life. The phrase you wrote Chuck about Pearl Harbor also stunned me. I did not connect the delivery of the Big Boys to the attack and bombing time frame until now.
