Grant-Kerr Posted March 11, 2018 Share Posted March 11, 2018 After many years of planning and research into this I have FINALLY started on my pet project of U.P Coal Turbine 80. It is in 1:32 Scale and two parts are scratch built and the 3rd part a bash from a MTH PA. I took a leaf out of someones post a while ago and started with the tender as the first stage of the build. So far after about 20 hrs of messing about this is as far as I have got with it. I might add here that the centipede section and front truck I managed to get from Ray but in his own words the truck is unobtainable and he was keeping the one he sent me as a spare, until i told him what was going on. Inserts behind the ladders and plan out ,drill the portholes, and then fit the two doors. They say the devil is in the detail and I am a little stumped with how to make vents. Even draw up the plans for it in that scale and borrowed a P.A. from the hobby shop I used to frequent in another life. Then I went to the darkside (1:32) with the promise of cookies, So it all got shelved until recently. rbrown7713 Posted March 19, 2018 Share Posted March 19, 2018 I should have explained this method in more detail. You can approach this project in two ways. As you see in the above picture, the vanes are just small styrene from the hobby shop, you will have to determine what size. If you are not making more than one or two, than just use this method and the vanes are more realistic, as there are spaces between the vanes, but I have to make many, so I made a mold and to make the pattern, I filled in between the vanes with clay for the making of the mold. You can't really tell, with this method, because when looking at it from the front, above level, it looks just like the ones with air between the vanes. To make the jig for this, I drew a full scale drawing in my cad program, Turbocad to get the proper measurements of the jig and cut them on a mill. If properly drawn, the vanes will be in the proper position in the grill and then used CA to glue. Worked for me. Bob. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I hope it does though as the panel is a nightmare as you can see from the original photo and to scale a 5 thou thick piece of brass sheet would be perfect, if it works that is. Still I have to try though as the tender with the louvers is a noticeable feature. Jerry. I am familiar with Bryans work and did discuss with him along time ago about U.P 80 and he was very interested. I was only thinking about him the other day and wondering what happened to him. At the moment it is drop in to allow for painting and the like. The piece of clear is to give me an idea of the hatch cover. Grant-Kerr Posted April 2, 2018 Author Share Posted April 2, 2018 Hatch Cover and Hand rails done except for the very front ones at the top, and the reason for that is some minor detail parts have to be done where they mount to. Also, the wire I used is music wire and it is as hard as hell, (Wrecked a quality hacksaw blade in 2 cuts) and tough to bend also. We learn I guess. Will get some brass wire later in the week to make the front rails. So... here is where I am at............. Now it is back to the body. A little bit of filler is required at the edges and that will be done. I have been using a very fine Auto finishing filler elsewhere on this but I am not happy with it.
