Need help with Bachmann 2-4-2 loco

I recently acquired a Prairie Flyer set with a 2-4-2 "Old Timer" Locomotive. Set the track up under the tree, put the Loco on the track and it gets power, but doesn't move under its own power like it should. It "bangs" and skips.

Took the lower chassis apart and on the rear drive wheels, there is a gear on a serrated axle shaft. The gear has a split in it between two teeth, and it doesn't grip on the axle like I feel it should. The Gear can also slide completely off of the serrated section.  I'm assuming this isn't how it should be and is the route of my problems? If so, does anyone know part numbers or parts I can use to fix this? Thanks

I think you have identified the problem correctly.

What I would do is go to Bachmann's website and see if you can find parts avail for that engine.  https://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/prod_serv.php

Is the engine you have the 2-4-2 Columbia?  https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=69_691&zenid=t7tvirvsbsabjmmp51dga26ti4

or the Lyu?  https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=69_597&zenid=t7tvirvsbsabjmmp51dga26ti4

I'm really not entirely sure what mine is exactly (included a picture) and I tried reaching out to Bachmann's service department via email and all they weren't much help.  I had found a part # for the Lyu, but the wheels have what appears to be a brass gear on it, whereas mine is a plastic gear.

and that gear also looks to be larger with more teeth compared to mine.
