Two Cylinder Shay Pull

I was amazed how well the 2 cylinder Shay performed.   The only obvious difference between the two is, I built a radiant burner for this one and made minor valve adjustments,  and it also has a Chuffer.  You can also hear the burner is up a bit and see the boiler pressure is up to 40lbs.

These are the very same cars used in the test of the 3 cylinder Shay.

I ran out of time today, but will try again on Tuesday, weather permitting, and add more cars and sand to both.

Any suggestions on how to perform this test will be appreciated,    and anyone willing to predict the weight of each pull is also welcome.

Please bear in mind I only have 5 more cars and 1/2 a bag of sand left.      Thank You.

Looks like it's running great Nick :)

On the test, what are you wanting to test, it's pulling power?  If that's the case what I have used for my pull tests is to connect the back coupler to a digital fish scale and hold the other end of the scale level with the coupler and monitor the stated lbs of pull force.  I have found it will vary a bit as the wheels bite and slip so I pick an average and note the peak.

Ray, Thank you for the compliment.

I'm only having fun with my trains and hoping to involve others in the game.    I thank you for your intuative approach to my test, but that would put a quick end to the fun.   LG

SteamPower4 Ever,  I don't doubt your 100lb train weight to equal 331/3 pulling weight.    Is that a standard or is there a chart somewhere I can find this info.

On another note, the cars won't hold 10lbs of sand, just maybe one more pound each,  but I do have 5 more cars and am willing to fill them all up to 6 lbs.   Thank You

Jens, Here it is,  I combined a two cylinder pull with the three cylinder one.

Again each car and load weigh a total of 5 lbs.   The two cylinder one stall after the last car was added, it made it 3/4 of the way around the track.  It kept slowing down and struggling and the last curve did it in. It stalled but the pressure kept building so when it got to 50lbs and still didn't move I shut it down.

The three cylinder just walked away with that and two more cars loaded with stones,  I ran out of cars and sand.  I found 5 LGB ore cars that will couple up to them, so I'm off to Home Depot tomorrow for more sand and more fun.   Now here comes the fun, posting the pics.

Jens,  I did it again using Grand Ephram, my very first LS locomotive.    I don't know if age and experience had anything to do with it, but he made it totally around the layout twice and through the very same curve that Jr came to a stall at.     I was going to add the cars with the stones like the 3 cylinder had, but I actually broke a coupler, and as you can see, like many seniors, the pressure relief valve is a bit weak.

Jens, yes it was also a 2 cylinder Shay.  I'm sure it is more broken in,  had it for over 9 years.   It was a KD coupler and it broke right where the screw goes through the shank,  I can't imagine it was the pull alone, I ASSUME it must have been cracked before.

More cars and more fun today.
