Chuck
Great find! A little over 5 years ago Lynn Nystrom suddenly died on 5/5/2010. I don't know when he joined the UP Steam Program but I have a feeling he was a charter member instrumental in bringing 3985 back to life. Here's a post from another forum about Lynn..."In my opinion, I am personally relived that my long time friend, Lynn Nystrom, is no longer with us so he doesn't have to witness the destruction of the whole entire UP steam program. It surely would have broken his heart to see what the current manager has done to his favorite steeds, 844 & 3985! I could also name lots of others with broken hearts right now." Jerry B44
Yeah, he was a great guy. I saw him every time I went to Cheyenne.
Chuck
March 1981 is when 3985 was fired up for the first time in years. The idea of restoring 3985 was conceived at a 1979 Christmas Party at Lynn Nystroms house. Here's a pic of that March 1981 day. A young Steve Lee (road foreman of engines Cheyenne) is in the center wearing coat with white stripes and white? pants. Lynn Nystrom is back towards the tender. 3985 was restored by UP employees who volunteered to work on it. Notice it's still a coal burner with the coal bunker extensions still attached ontop the tender. Here's another pic

Chuck
But wait as there's more! These shots have a unknown date...that is they were taken sometime in the 1970's. About 3985 it isn't known if it was taken say in the early 70's before it was cosmetically restored then set back out for display or if taken just before restoration began in say 1979. What is for sure is these were taken in the roundhouse before most of it was demolished.

Jerry B44
Maybe they will start work on it, now that 4014 is done, although there may be some problems to work out on it. Maybe you can find out in Cheyenne.
