Screwy Nick Posted October 17, 2016 Share Posted October 17, 2016 Sorry to say I have neglected my sparkies. My inside rail is SS for them and hadn't run anything on it since last fall. Yesterday I took out my LGB Forney, put it down connected the power supply and off it went. It only stalled once at a poor electrical connection, then off again, flawlessly for over an hour. The rail has been outside for over 10 years, formerly used in an on ground layout and then moved to an elevated one. I have only wiped it down once using a discarded towel after my airplane powered diesel blew oil all over it. A long over due THANK YOU to Aristocraft. Rayman4449 Posted October 17, 2016 Share Posted October 17, 2016 Your experiences mirrors mine, I love stainless steel rail and without question feel it is the only way to go for outdoor layouts. SS rail, SS direct to rail split jaw clamps and 12gauge wire feeders for loops 150ft+ and you're set. Never clean rail and your wheels stay clean. Screwy Nick Posted October 17, 2016 Author Share Posted October 17, 2016 Ray, we have the same experience. I did use the supplied rail clamps using conductive grease at a few joints. For the first 3 years I tightened them down a bit. Like you, every 25' or so connected a jumper using 12 gauge as you described, that is where the rail clamps became most useful as the side screws made for secure electrical connections using O ring connectors.. Most of the track is the 8' lengths Aristo had on special for a while. I still have some lengths and several boxes of sectional hoping to expand the center loop some day.
