  1. Thanks for the great links Joe. I am an artist and was thinking about a paint job but with the tiny letters and numbers involved and the amount of engines i plan on doing up im thinking decals, although i will look into the stencil job. I am also debating if i want to go the dirty clay look. There are 11 engines 4 gp38s 4 sd40-2 and 4 sd40-m2 rebuilds, and i think i wanna do the whole fleet.  I was thinking I would use a planter liner as a way to soak the body in and get the paint off and then maybe use a coat hanger to spray the body with an even coat. Im still looking into the best paint to use and the best removal option. I am really hoping to find something on the green side, as i try to keep away from harsh chemicals if i can. I will document my progress on here, and im sure will have more questions.

  2. Alright well now that i have chosen an area for the railroad i have to start slowly buying track. My biggest concern is debris from the tree above and the insect poo (a lot of people call it sap unknowingly) and the amount of moisture in the air all the time. Im in the mountains and actually on the side of one and well it is pretty much a moist fest. I have been reading about brass and stainless and the positive and negatives and I am trying to figure out which is the best direction to head. I did look at the svrr track but it appears i have to do a lot of bending on my own, and i think to start out i want to just buy it and lay it out. Im guessing there will be a couple hundred feet of track involved and will involve a lot of trestles being on the side of a terrace( i have been eyeballing the bridge masters redwood trestles and such). From the looks of things i will be running piko mth and usa on this track so i need something that will work for all 3. Any advice or recommendations for my type of environment would be great.

  3. Glad they finally mentioned something on their facebook regarding g scale, the shells look nice. Trying to think of how i could incorporate a few dash 8s into my future plans. What are the odds they will release a 2015 catalog in g since it is their anniversary and all?

  4. The grey is fine as just paint over it...use it as a primer. Myself I'd remove all detail pieces and give it a good washing with warm soapy water and then start painting. Those decals can be home made if you feel like learning how to do artwork...if not then just contact Stan Cedarleaf as he'll set you up.

Thanks for the helpful info. The grey loco appears to be very hard to locate so i may just search out a used engine that doesnt even run just so i can have a chance to see how it goes and if all else fails i only lose a shell. I most definitely will contact Stan as i will want the decals to be exact.  Thanks for the info.

  5. I am thinking about attempting to create the new Blue Ridge Southern line and had some questions about repainting an undecorated usa trains model. Does the shell come completely blank or do i still need to remove the gray color? Also on the numbers that light up. Is there a way to put new numbers in there very easily? It appears the undecorated has no numbers. Also how does one go about obtaining decals to scale? Here is a link to a photo of their scheme if anyone was curious what it looked like.

  6. I have been eyeballing the engines they have listed and if you look at the bottom on the description it says the engines have not been tested but they can do an engine tuneup, this to me seems like a red flag. Essentially they are saying the engines may not work. Between that and the 441 Negative reviews i would be very cautious.

  7. Behind a 1:32 MTH Hudson the USA cars (as nice as they are) will undoubtedly look way too large behind it.  I will add that I do run Aristocraft Heavyweights behind my Hudson and am happy with how they look.

Hmmm I may have to see if aristo made the cars im looking for, then try and locate them. Thanks for the info

  8. Thanks Jerry for weighing in with the helpful info. After a lot of talking with Ray I also discovered a broken front middle post. I was able to run the engine and everything else checked out. This first purchase of just an engine sort of being used was a great learning process as it appears I will still have a usable engine. I may have been a little too excited about actually finding one of these that I just ignored any red flags that we're waving, saying hey this may be too good to be true. may check out the sunset valley track and just keep the Piko track for my euro stuff. I'm going to have two layouts in separate areas of the yard. One euro and one North America.

  9. I have too been hunting for this diesel, more specifically the reading version. i did find what appears to be a bunch of 1 gauge stuff at trainuniverse.com but after an email and 2 phone calls with no return message my instinct tells me not to go that route. If someone else wants to try it or has dealt with them in the past and they are legit then it sounds like a sweet deal especially priced around 375.00. If i happen to come by any others ill be sure to post here.

  10. If a person chose not to order pre order is there still a likely hood that they would be able to locate the engine easily and purchase it after the release. The market appears to be quite small and i would assume that production runs would reflect that. It seem almost as if these engines are quite limited and would not last long. I am trying to get a feel for how urgent buying what you want is, and how long popular engines usually last for before being completely gone. It would help me to prioritize how i purchase future pieces and in what sequence i should do it. I also got to thinking since i have a interest in the euro stuff as well, is there any reason mth has not gotten into the euro g scale market. I noticed some of the euro stuff in 1:32 so there is clearly a market but only see them in the smaller scales. Also with the 1000 being canceled does this mean that engine will most likely never be produced again unless their g sales increase dramatically?

  11. I decided to take a even closer look at the locomotive and noticed that my smokestack is indeed cracked. I am guessing this loco is too old for MTH to do any sort of fix on that. Any info on this cracking issue? Will it get worse.

    Hi there Mike,

Looks like you made a great find there!  The engine does look mint which is really good.  If you can take some up close photos of the plastic part(s) that you're talking about I'm sure we can identify what it is and where it belongs.  And also same about the mark that you're talking about.

Congrats again and look forward to seeing more of the engine :)

    Hey Ray,

Indeed it does look great, i am still nervous having not run it yet but there isnt much i can do till i get that remote. The photo above of the underneath of the tender by the axles. Do you see the scuffing? is that a manufacturer thing or is that something that i should be concerned with? Here is a photo of the little piece that i myself may have actually broken off.

  13. Hey all I just got home from the local toy shop with what I am told is a new Hudson that has only been run just to make sure everything was working. I was skeptical but when I arrived there she was in the case looking mighty clean. Still not sure if she is actually new. Upon further inspection i did notice what looked to be either residue or rust on the front wheels, but even the track gliders did not appear to be worn much at all. It came with the box, the wrapping,  all the paperwork, and even the shipper box. I do, however, have no idea if she actually works, as i do not have a DCS remote. The gentleman did say if something was wrong with her he would refund me what i paid. I got it for 599 which seemed like a good deal.. i had not actually seen a 1 gauge steam engine in person before this and man i gotta say this thing is a monster and holds some serious weight. I did happen to find a little tiny piece of plastic in the Styrofoam which i took a photo of. I could not locate where it may have come from. I also noticed on the tender around the axles on the plastic there is what appears to be a weird marking in the same spot on the black plastic. i tried to get a closeup of it. Its by every wheel on the tender. Now i just need that remote system...Now having one in my hands I think I understand why they are very hard to find. It definitely feels good to have my first real engine and hopefully I can contribute a little more useful info from this point forward. I am gonna post some photos and if anyone notices anything that should raise some flags i would greatly appreciate it.

  14. Hi Mike!

Just wanted to let you know that SideTrack Hobbies in Leonardtown, MD. (301-475-8985) has a Erie Triplex listed for $899.00.  It's the  M70-3022-1  bluish-gray Russian Iron one.

                                   Joe
