Jerry B44
Saw this on ebay and thought I could cut it down to match my MTH Santa Fe coaches. It is extruded aluminum that is thick and tough. Just getting the car apart was a job. Lot of compromises involved to get this to work out. Cut some off the bottom of the car and raised the floor. Put in seats, took out the old seats in the dome and put in some of the Great Trains seats I still had. Gary Raymond ball bearing wheels pickups for the lights, and man does it roll nice! I had to modify the ends also and put on Kadee 830's to mate up with the MTH couplers. I was worried about the proportions of the car and how it would fit in with the MTH cars but I'm pretty happy how it came out. Looks real good from my deck! Here it is with the Santa Fe coaches. du-bousquetaire
Great job Jerry. Is that a USA trains dome car that you reduced to 1/32 scale? I am interested in that because they make a super Congressional set of cars and although it would be a lot of work, it is very tempting to take a cm off the width and the height to make 1/32 scale cars out of them. Or is De Hanes the name of a brand I never heard about from here in France?
Jerry B44
De Hanes was made here back in the 80's, about 1/24 scale. 26" and 30" cars, plus engines. They are thick extruded aluminum and very heavy. I did use just a USA dome piece that I narrowed down some to put a dome on a UP MTH car. Easier than this job! I was just using a jig saw.
