Norfolk Southern was formed by the merger of Norfolk Western and Southern Railway on this day 34 years ago.  June 1, 1982

From their online postings:

It’s Wayback Wednesday and Norfolk Southern’s birthday! On June 1, 1982, Norfolk Southern was created with the consolidation of Southern Railway and Norfolk and Western Railway, which trace their lineages to the 1820s. The new company was headquartered in Norfolk—the only major city in Virginia where N&W and Southern tracks meet. In 1982, the historic port city celebrated its 300th birthday.

On June 1, 1999, Norfolk Southern acquired a large portion of Conrail, increasing market reach and returning rail competition to the Northeast for the first time since the 1970s.

Thirty-four years ago today, Norfolk and Western and Southern got together to make a little history.
