June 1, 1982 From their online postings: It’s Wayback Wednesday and Norfolk Southern’s birthday! On June 1, 1982, Norfolk Southern was created with the consolidation of Southern Railway and Norfolk and Western Railway, which trace their lineages to the 1820s.
