Rayman4449
Wanted to share that I do have a replacement motor available for the USA Hudson for $175.00. This motor addresses issues with the original: Operates at a higher top speed when run at max track voltage. This addresses the complaint by some that it's top speed was too low.Has ball bearings on both ends of the motor for lifetime reliability.Video of a USA Trains Hudson motor with a failed bearing on the worm gear end: (With the upgrade motor you will never have this) http://www.rayman4449.com/USA_Trains_Hudson_Motor_Failure_101910_0001a.JPG Given that USA Trains has been out of stock on these motors for a couple of years this helps provide an option. benshell
Very interesting Ray! I didn't know USA Trains Hudsons had this issue, but I'm glad to hear you've found a replacement. This does seem like pretty expensive upgrade though. Although I have never looked into the cost of a large motor like this. I don't know if I'll ever get a Hudson, but I'm certainly getting more and more interested in repairing, kitbashing, and maybe even scratchbuilding locomotives. Rayman4449
I think that for the vast majority of users they wont run their engines enough for this to happen but this does show that with enough use you can wear out the worm gear side bearing (because of the outward forces being applied by the worm and main gear interaction). It is definitely not cheap for sure but for me it was worth it for the improved performance and going with ball bearings. The upgrade motor also has a short additional length of shaft that extends out the back for flywheeling if its wanted. Going to be interesting to see if you get further into more kitbashing, custom work. Its an interesting and fun challenge for sure
Chuck
Ray's replacement motors are the best! Why USA Trains didn't specify a ball bearing equipped version is beyond me.
