enginear joe
I ran for years down here. I got spoiled. No leaves, or bird droppings, etc. There aren't that many great days in the year to run trains up here year round. I intended to move all the G outside and build my O scale RR down here. My heart won't leave G. I have to run it in the winter too. I looked at moving a loop of track up to the ceiling. With my condition, I would not be able to lift stuff up there safely. One day it hit me. DUH! Just move them down lower. I'll have the extra room I need to build my O and still have an inside loop of G for the bad weather times. It has taken me a long time to clear out the junk stuffed under the layout. It takes me like 4 times as long as it used to, to do just about anything. Here's the start (everything is a mess!):
Sean
Nice! So are you going to put a loop of HO above the O ?? The area under the third pics looks like you have room for a yard!
Jerry B44
Looking good. I hear you on it taking 4 times as long to do anything anymore, guess it willl keep increasing with age. Sigh...
enginear joe
Ok. 1) I took down the HO loop years ago and all the stuff is in boxes. Sooooooo, I could do that. 2) if it looks like more track will fit, then it will get more track. I need as much track down as I can get. After moving the cabinets on the rear wall forward to allow the train to go behind, I wondered if I should just get rid of them for more room. Baby steps. 3) I guessed at the four times as long. I didn't want to admit to ten times as long. If it gets any more than that, I should just sub it out.
enginear joe
I got a little further along on the project. I forgot how much work it is to build this. I showed the blank space and then what the panel looks like that will fit in the last 2 pics.
Jerry B44
Cleaning track of leaves/etc sort of looks easier! I could not do all that wiring you have there.
enginear joe
Well, you're looking at the wiring of the layout above that needs to get moved to allow the new RR to go in. There's even a extension cord hanging that powered my saw. I will clean it up later. Each track has 2 wires. I know some guys make that seem difficult and dwell on it, maybe even make it their thing? (not U Jerry! someone else who watches my comments and cries.) I've been doing it since my HO days when I was 8. No big deal.
enginear joe
This is taking me much longer than I thought! I'm going to have a double mainline and I have to go back and make things wider.
Sean
I noticed that you will have a similar problem as I have. When your all done , you will have all these tools that you are using .. Hmmm were to put them .. Wow I didn't think I had this many tools. Can't wait to see some track in place!
enginear joe
Tools! Love 'em! Gotta have 'em! Where to keep them all is always the problem. To make things worse, I can't always seem to get rid of the old ones that I've replaced. I got a few more sections done. It finally hit me. Paint the edges first! For all this work, I had to go double mainline like I used to have down there. I will try and add a passing siding to hold a third train, if it will fit.
enginear joe
Here's the difference with the double mainline. It takes me so long to do now. I'm getting old.....
Sean
Did you happen to take a nap .. since you were already down there? Looking good there Joe!

enginear joe
Ok, one loop is running! Not finished by a long shot yet. 2 yard tracks and the inner mainline to go.
enginear joe
should have posted the finished outer main! (running)
Jerry B44
Nice smoke when you are inside with no wind, living in the country I get a lot of wind.
enginear joe
For some reason, none of my (3) Challengers smoke that well? Almost every other engine I have smokes better. To make the picture look better, I used the "Labored" button on the DCS remote to kick up the smoke volume. I got a Hudson that was pretty beat up. It still smokes like a champ! I bought a used Hudson's smoke unit and put it in my scratch built SD70ACe. That was a mistake because it smokes way too much! There must be something different in the way the Challenger's smoke unit is built or how it's powered???
BNSF 828
Joe - what are the dimensions of your basement layout? Any sidings or Spurs?
enginear joe
Well, my layout goes completely around the walls. So by memory my house is something like 44 x 32 with a 30 x 24 addition that forms a "T" off the house. There will be sidings. I left it unfinished as my attention went to building the outside RR for the spring.
Jerry B44
Joe, I think all the G scale smoke units are the same, ones I've seen in mine are. But I have not torn out the Challengers . Maybe it's the two outlets, smoke is spread over two holes? My Hudson is my best smoker also, does have a smaller diameter hole in the stack, as I recall. I did put new wicks/heater units in it. Hard to get it lined back up. My BB smoke unit is loose, not sure why, so have to tear into it someday, could be a bear to get to! My F units don't smoke very well, again you have two outlets and those little ducts the smoke has to go through to get out from the one unit. Dash 8 smokes well, again one outlet.
