rbrown7713
Well, some black seals around the glass and some silver paint and I am done with the second one, now for the eight truck sides. That will take some time. Bob.

rbrown7713
Thank you guys, I appreciate it. Like I say, just a few more things and both locos will be done. I will be happy about that, because I have a car to fix, a bad trans. Bob.
rbrown7713
Since I am making two locos, I couldn't get all of the parts that I need, so I had to make a mold for these additional parts. Bob.
rbrown7713
Someone asked how I did the seals on the P42, so here are some pictures on how I am doing it. I first do the horizontal and let dry, and then do the vertical about 2 days later. Bob
enginear joe
with those great looking molds, I'd be interested in a release when you're ready to sell! What???? Ya mean I'm gonna have to do all this work?, too?
rbrown7713
Joe, if you ever get this far, I will make some parts for you, just send me the pictures. Here is what they look like. Just about there. Now I have to make the truck rails, boy I dread this. Bob.
rbrown7713
I just painted the silver on the second loco, here it is. Bob.
Chuck
Looking good! Keep the pic's a coming!!
enginear joe
I bought 2 versions of silver and have not tried them yet. I bought the Rustoleum 2x and the Krylon versions. I'd like to see which looks like Amtrak silver. Then again, I don't even know what silver they used or if they were different!
rbrown7713
The first loco, I used Tamiya TS17, and to me that was the best. On the second one, I used Testors Diamond Dust. Looks OK, but I prefer the TS17.
rbrown7713
Wait just a minute. If you are buying silver paint, does that mean that you have been kitbashing the LGB loco. all of this time and not telling us? Boy, If you are, that is pretty sneaky. Post some pictures. Bob. rbrown7713
I installed the PS3 board in the Challenger and while trying to hook up the short wires, the front drivers rolled over and busted one of the articulating arm studs off, so I made another repair, this time I did it. I ordered a 3 inch speaker for the Challenger, but saw that it already had a 3 inch, so I retrofitted the P42 with the new 3 inch speaker, that might make it sound better. Still working on the side rails, should have something to look at in a few days. Bob.
rbrown7713
Here is the 3 Inch speaker installed, but the O gauge metal mount for the the board, I am afraid that it will effect the permanent magnet in the speaker because I can feel a magnetic pull on it when put the metal board mount in place. I am going to replace the metal with wood. It is very close to the board. Does anyone think that the permanent magnet effect have an effect on the performance of the sound board? Let me know please. Bob.
enginear joe
I always have worried more about the speaker performance being affected by any metal close to the speaker itself. I am modifying a F40PH for Amtrak don't forget. Someone making me masks for the lettering has me stalled. I will paint the silver on that when I get the masks. With you guys sharing your work, I'm happy to post mine. It should help make yours look even better!
rbrown7713
I forgot. I thought that you were working on a P42, forgot about the 40. The more I do on these, the more that I realize that I have to do. Oh well, they will be done before too long. Bob.
Chuck
Bob, I've mounted boards directly over speaker magnets like that with no problems...but I use a piece of say 1/8" plastic under the board mount. Well with a Genesis I mounted the boards to the rear of the loco ontop the weights. Glad to see you coming along with the build!
rbrown7713
Thanks Chuck. I have to keep the board in the center as I am mounting the batteries in the front and the rear, I am also mounting the board on a piece of 1/8th inch plywood rather than the metal O gauge mount, so it should be OK. Should be finished and rolling on the track in about two weeks. Bob.
rbrown7713
Here are some pictures of the repair that I made to the articulating elbow for the front driver on the Challenger. I broke it when the drivers rolled over trying to plug in the short wires to connect them to power. I have since lengthened the wires so that wouldn't happen again. I turned a T shaped pin on the lathe and then drilled out the old remaining pin and then inserted the new pin and secured with a screw, good as new. I made the new pin out of Delrin, stuff that is almost bullet proof. Bob.
rbrown7713
Here is how I mounted the battery boxes for the P42 and the Challenger. The battery box for the Challenger is in the tender. The TIU for the P42 will be in the second P42. The TIU for the Challenger will be in a PFE reefer. Bob.
rbrown7713
I mounted the trucks with the side rails on, still adjusting. Bob.
enginear joe
She's stunning. She has a plain utilitarian look. Seeing all the trains they've pulled for how long they've pulled them, I really like this model.
rbrown7713
Thank you very much Joe, very much appreciated. It will look better with some decals and mirrors and windshield wipers. I have ordered some wipers, hope they will fit in. Bob.
